Teluk Intan
Teluk Intan is one of the largest towns in Perak, it is surrounded by big rivers. Previously, this town was known as Teluk Anson, in honour of the British official who helped to establish it in the 1880s.
The town is most famous for its pagoda shaped clock tower known as the Menara Condong or Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan. It is located in the center of a square surrounded by Jalan Pasar, Jalan Selat, Jalan Bandar and Jalan Ah Cheong.
The 25 meter tower is also a counterpart of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Itali. Although it is not as tall or famous as the one in Itali, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan has it’s own historical values.
It was constructed in 1885 by Mr. Leong Choon Cheong and some Ceylonese contractors to store water for local usage during the dry season and in case of fire. Since it began leaning over due to soft soil foundations it has become a tourist attraction. The building is made of bricks and wood. Now it is serving as a clock tower.
