Budget
An allocation of RM280.25bil for Budget 2018 has been proposed by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. That is an increase of RM19.45bil compared to 2017 budget allocation of RM260.8bil. Overall, RM234.45bil is for administration, the remaining RM46bil is for development.
For student who applied National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans, 20% discount will be given if they manage to fully settle their loan by end of 2018.
"In the PTPTN chapter, I hope everyone understands that debts are debts and must be paid. I hope this is not politicised and that the debtors pay back what they owe because the next generation will also need the loans, just as you have," he said during the Budget 2018 on Friday.
I think this is a good effort to encourage graduates to repay the debt as they are getting discount. However, it will not solve any long term struggles faced by the graduates. As many fresh graduates are struggling to find a job, some work for average salary just enough to make ends meet, thus paying the full amount in a year can be hard.
Furthermore, 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) will be maintained and there won’t be any increase. I think the government should consider increasing the amount, at least another RM50 to help the rakyat to face the rising cost of living.
There is also an allocation for the development of rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak. This includes the infrastructure of bridges, street lighting, mosques and so on. Also, the electricity and water quality. I think this is a good effort in making sure Sabah and Sarawak is also developing.
